Dr Enyinna Nkem-Abonta, head of the eMonti STP,  believes it is time South Africa changed its macro economic policy to one that will allow for double-digit growth prospects.

If you look at South Africa's economy – high unemployment, which has led to high crime – and low growth, and consider this has been the case for many years, I believe it is time we adopted a radically different approach to our macro-economic policy.

The eMonti STP will stimulate economic growth.
eMonti Science and Technology Park head Dr Enyinna Nkem-Abonta joined the East London Industrial Development Zone three years ago to help set up the eMonti Science and Technology Park (eMonti STP).

Looking at his career it looks like it has all been in preparation for the role he will play in getting the Eastern Cape's first science and technology park up and running.

He holds a PhD in economics and a Masters in Physics. He has an MBA and was professor extraordinaire teaching economics to PhD students at the University of Pretoria.

To better concentrate its activities, the eMonti Science and Technology Park (eMonti STP) initiated a value chain analysis to establish which industry sectors within the Eastern Cape would be best served by a science park.

There is a widely held belief that for a country or region to be economically significant it has to be a leader in one or two value chains, where a company or sector in that region controls the design of a product and everything leading off from it.

Alternative energy sources, such as solar power, are just one of four key clusters that the eMonti STP will focus on.
Solar power will be an area of focus.
National chemical incubator Chemin was the first eMonti Science and Technology Park (eMonti STP) tenant, having taken up occupation in November 2011.

As an incubator with special focus on the chemical industry, this government agency is responsible for helping many start-ups break into the market.

In the past financial year alone, over R4.9 million has been generated nationally by 33 companies trading under Chemin.
